Workshops & Tutorials: Workshop 5

Moving Up the Value Chain…

This workshop is cancelled. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Aim
The main theme of this workshop is to exchange the experience in adding value through User Centered Design and to explore ways to further add value through sharing collective wisdom. Indian IT industry is maturing and so are the designers individually. While working in their own context, people have done many projects successfully where they added significant value through user centered design. However, there is still much to be done. Ultimately, it comes to the business benefit that the organizations get and the individual fulfillment that the designer derives through work. Often, we seem to base our strategies on individual experiences in specific context. This workshop gives an opportunity to understand avenues for adding better value through experience sharing.

Content
The participants need to have 5 years or more experience in design domain and are expected to participate with a case study that encapsulates the value added by design rather than the project details. Every participant needs to present the context, the challenges faced and how did one overcome those and finally a value addition to the product, project or business. Non-design professionals are also welcome to participate with a note on their position. The case study brief or a position note needs to be submitted 2 weeks in advance.

The workshop will be conducted in two sessions. Each participant will present his / her own case study and learning in the first session. In the second session, there will be a brainstorming followed by moderated discussion. The findings of the discussion will be consolidated in the following points:
The challenges to add value
• What is the ‘value’ that design creates?
• The context of the employing industry e.g. size, market, location, maturity etc.
• What are the engagement models e.g. centralized group, embedded designers, early or late engagments
• Design characteristics of a service or product e.g. Portals, consumer products or enterprise products
• Capabilities, Skills and expertise
• Culture, maturity and other organizational characteristics
The strategies and solutions to add value
• Short term, midterm and Long term road map creation
